"Hyder, Prince Rupert, Smithers, Prince George, Kootenay Lake"

Stewart and Hyder are twin cities, but Stewart is in British Columbia and Hyder is in Alaska. These towns are so small you don't need your passport to cross the border. This road sign gives you an idea of the quality of the roads here. In Stewart we got fuel in the backyard of a very small store. It was the only station in town. We drove out to the town of Hyder to watch the bears in a bear viewing area. We saw 3 bears, 2 black and 1 grizzly but not close enough to take pictures that would be great for you to see. This area has many, many great glaciers and lots of waterfalls. Just beautiful!!! We got up on August 3rd. and drove to Prince Rupert. We left at 10:00 and got there at 4:20, another long day of driving. On the way to Prince Rupert we drove up a long Fjord, at the base of high mountains and in view of more glaciers and waterfalls. the Harbor but mostly it is a fishing and ferry terminal. Then we went out to an old fishing town Fort George. Its gone to pot but still interesting. The next day we left for Prince George. On the way we pulled along the side of the road for lunch and when we left we had gone only about 1/4 mile when a big BANG hit, wow a flat tire. Sam replaced the flat. Replacing a flat on a 5th wheel is not a easy task. We drove to Smithers B.C. where a very nice boy replaced our tire with an extra one we had with us, free!! We are now down to 1 trailer spare tire and 1 truck spare tire. Since we caught our halibut we have been eating fish two meals a day until now. Now we see a McDonalds in Smithers and stop to eat a hamburger and fries. It was like a great treat, Oh So Good!!!! We got to Prince George which is not really a Port. We went to a very old Railroad Museum. It was the best Sam and I ever saw, mind you nothing was shiny. The units were pretty much the way they were when taken out of service. You could go in and out and climb on everything, we felt just like kids. We drove on August 8th to Christina Lake B.C.. Here we are stayed all week. That's great because Sam and our truck pulled some of the steepest grades we ever had to pull and both were pretty worn out. We went down to the Christina lake, it is so beautiful, with its high mountain back drop. We drove into a town called Grand Forks an found this little "Ukrainian" deli stop and got cheese perogies. We took a hike to falls called "Cascade Falls". Then we drove to the trestle road where we walked to the Canadian Pacific's longest trestle bridge in British Columbia. Grand Forks even has a small movie house so we saw "Ice Age II". On the 15th we drove to Woodbury Resort which is on Kootenay Lake. This lake is about 90 miles long and 10 miles wide. It has the deepest blue water and is very cold. We stayed right on the lake with great view. We took the Ferry at Balfour, across Kootenary Lake to the other side to see a small, small town where they make straw brooms, chenille blankets. Then further down the road we went to a glass house made out of Embalming Fluid Bottles. Yes I did say Embalming. This mortician had all his friends keep their bottles for him and he keep them for years. Then one day when he retired he built his retirement home out of these bottles. The next day we went to "Ainsworth Hot Springs" This hot springs is just wonderful because the outside has a great hot tub and a large warm pool. Where you see the people sitting in the tub above is a horseshoe entry into a beautiful cave with stalactites hanging down and where hot water has run down for years. The walls and ceiling look like the Tufas on Mono Lake. We went to this old town way up in the mountains that was mining camp right on a river. The owner of the town has old electric buses he bought from Vancouver when they changed to diesel buses. He has used them in movies . This is where the oldest still operating hydroelectric power plant in Canada is. August 21th ,Sam's Birthday!! I made cupcakes but did not have candles so I stuck a match in the cupcake and put it into a soup bowl and lit it with a long lighter starter. Happy Birthday Sam!!!
